Premature gray hair is a very common issue, affecting both men and women and it’s starting to appear in much younger age, people in their 20ties and 30ties are complaining of this problem. It can be caused by a number of things but mainly it’s due to genetics, hormonal imbalance, stress, unhealthy diet and lifestyle, thyroid disorders, sinusitis and even chronic colds can affect this problem.
How does this process occur?
Well your hair starts turning gray due to the low production of melanin, the pigment responsible for the hair color. This pigment decreases as we age and eventually its production stops entirely. However, it shouldn’t happen as soon as it does.
Whatever the reason behind your premature hair graying is you need to know that there is a solution for this problem. And we’re not talking about commercial hair colors, full of toxic chemicals. We’re talking about some very useful natural remedies which can bring your color back to its former glory. In addition to these natural remedies you need to start a healthy diet. It’s possible that your body lacks certain essential minerals and vitamins like iron, vitamin B and copper, which is causing your hair to turn gray.
- Indian gooseberry
Indian gooseberry (amla), is excellent for a number of hair problems including premature graying, dull hair, and hair loss. It’s rich in antioxidants and vitamin C. You should start consuming Indian gooseberry, and apply its pulp or gooseberry oil on your hair.
Boil several dried Indian gooseberries or amla powder in some coconut oil, until they become charred. Allow the oil to cool and apply it on your scalp and hair. Leave it on overnight, or at least for an hour, before rinsing it out. Repeat the treatment twice a week.
Note: You can also mix an equal amounts almond oil and Indian gooseberry juice and add some lime juice. Not only that this mixture will reduce the graying of your hair, but it will also support its healthy growth.
- Curry leaves
Curry leaves in combination with coconut oil can stimulate darker pigmentation in your hair.
Add one tablespoon of coconut oil in a pan and add a handful of curry leaves. Leave them on medium heat until the leaves become charred and strain the mixture. Let it cool down a bit and massage your scalp with the mixture. Leave it on your scalp for 30-40 minutes and rinse with warm water. Repeat the treatment 1-2 times a week.

You’ve probably heard about henna and you know that it has been used to darken the hair for centuries back. However, maybe you didn’t know that it’s also very beneficial when it comes to conditioning and strengthening of the hair.
- Grinded henna leaves
- of coffee powder
- of Indian gooseberry powder
- A bit of plain yogurt
Combine the ingredients in a thick paste and spread the paste on your entire hair length. Leave it to dry out and then wash your hair like you usually do. Repeat this treatment every 2-4 weeks.
- Lemon juice and coconut oil
Coconut oil can be used for a number of issues and it’s very beneficial when it comes to premature hair graying. It also stimulates hair growth, moisturizes your hair, adds luster to it and fights against infections. If you use it continually for a longer period its antioxidants will reverse your gray hair.
Mix 3 tablespoons of lemon juice with some coconut oil so that you get enough to cover your entire hair length. Apply the mixture to your hair and massage your scalp. Leave it on for at least an hour and wash your hair like you normally do. Repeat this process every week.
- Sage and Rosemary
These two herbs are extremely effective for hair darkening and here’s how you can use them.
Mix half a cup of rosemary with half a cup of sage and add the mix to a pan of boiling water. Leave it to boil for about 30 minutes and set it aside to cool off. Once it’s completely cooled you can apply the mixture on you scalp and entire hair length. Leave it on for about 15-20 minutes and rinse. Repeat the treatment once a week.
