Sodium bicarbonate, or baking soda, is a substance that is naturally in a fine powder form. It has many beneficial properties such as anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, antiseptic, and even antibacterial. It has been found to be effective against oral and skin issues and even colds. However, don’t overdo it or you can actually damage the gums, hair, and skin.
Benefits of Baking Soda for the Body
Baking soda can help improve skin complexion by removing the dead skin cells and balancing the skin’s pH level which is imperative for clearer and healthier skin. In order to do so, make a paste by using filtered rose water and add 1-2 teaspoons of baking soda. Once the paste is made, apply it directly onto your face and let it sit for a minute. Then rub it off using your fingertips. Next, use lukewarm water to wash your face completely. You can use this treatment once or twice a week. You may also mix lemon juice and 4-5 extra virgin olive oil and put it on your face and letting it sit for five minutes and then wash it off with cold water. You can do this procedure 2 or 3 times per week.
2.Combat Acne and Zits
Since we already know it’s great for your face and skin, know that baking soda is also great as an acne treatment. All it takes is one teaspoon of water with a little baking soda to make a paste and let it sit on the affected area for 1 or 2 minutes. Then wash your face with cold water to remove the paste. You can use this treatment 2 or 3 days and then try to back off on the treatment to maintain healthier skin by doing it 1 or 2 times each week.
Brighten those pearly weights and eliminate plaque and yellow stains with baking soda. All it takes is adding a little of it to your toothpaste on your toothbrush and just brush your teeth like you normally would but for two minutes. Only do this once a day. You can actually create a teeth whitening concoction by mixing 4 tablespoons of turmeric root, 3 tablespooons of extra-virgin coconut oil, and 2 tablespoons of baking soda. Use this mixture for a few days but only during one of your daily brushings. Too much baking soda can actually break down the natural enamel on your teeth so too much is not a good thing.
4.Fight Off Body Odor
If we didn’t know that baking soda didn’t fight off odor, we wouldn’t put it in our refrigerators. The same is true for our bodies! Baking soda can absorb sweat and moisture from the skin and lessen the disgusting body odor. Simply make a mixture of 1 tablespoon of water, an 1/8 of a teaspoon of baking soda and few drops of any essential oil and apply it to the skin with a cotton ball. There is also an alternative mixture using equal parts of cornstarch and baking soda and applying directly into your armpits to eliminate bad odor and prevent perspiration.
5.Alleviate Skin Rashes or Irritations
If your skin is itchy or has an irritation or rash, then baking soda might be the answer to reduce the inflammation. Due to baking soda’s anti-inflammatory qualities, it also treats the itching and swelling. For a specific irritated area, use a 1:3 ratio mixture of water and baking soda. Apply the combo to the affected area, letting it set for a couple of minutes. Next, wash it off with cool water. You can use this treatment regularly. If you have itching all over your body, try a bathtub soak instead. Use 1 cup of baking soda in a tub full of cool water and let yourself soak it up for 10 minutes a day. If your skin is severely damaged or irritated, do not use baking soda as it could cause flare ups.
6.Find Relief for Sunburns
If you have a sunburn or blisters from a really bad sunburn, baking soda can help relieve burning and itching by calming the irritated skin. Due to the drying and antiseptic properties of baking soda, it can dry up the blisters fast. All you have to do is mix 1-2 tablespoons of baking soda with cold water. Dip a washcloth into the mixture and wring it out so the excess isn’t sopping. Next apply it to the affected area, leaving it for 5 or 10 minutes. You can repeat this 2 or 3 times per day until you feel complete relief. You might also consider filling a bathtub full of water, adding a half of a cup of baking soda to the bath, mixing it well before hopping into the tub. Sit in the baking soda bath for 10-15 minutes. Pat your body dry or even air dry. You can do this once a day for a few days until the sunburn disappears or you find relief.
7.Treat Fungus on Nails
Nail fungus can be difficult to remove but you can use baking soda in a concoction to help treat it. Use 1 cup of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar and mix in 2 tablespoons of baking soda. Soak your toenails for five minutes. Afterwards, pat them dry. You can repeat this process two times a day. For your fingernails or toenails, there is another option by making a paste. Use warm water combined with 1-2 teaspoons of baking soda and apply it directly onto the nails, letting it set for a couple of minutes. Rinse this paste off with warm water and continue to do this one time each day.
8.Eliminate Stains or Nail Discoloration
As you might have noticed, baking soda has been great to make teeth whiter or just have an overall natural bleaching quality. It also exfoliates which is great for eliminating stains. In order to treat yellow or stained nails, mix a half of a cup of water with 1 teaspoon of 3% hydrogen peroxide and a tablespoon of baking soda in a bowl. Mix this up really well and then soak your nails for 2-3 minutes. You can do this once every two weeks to help eliminate stains. Another option is to use 1 tablespoon of 3% hydrogen peroxide with 2 ½ tablespoons of baking soda to make a paste. Use this to apply to your nails with a cotton swab. Use this treatment every two months.
9.Eliminate Hair Oil and Stench
Since we know that baking soda can balance pH levels due to its alkaline properties, we can use it on the scalp to keep it clean and healthy. In order to treat oils and bad odor in dirty hair, create a 1:3 ratio mixture of baking soda and water. Apply this to damp hair and let it soak for five minutes and then rinse. Use this treatment twice a month. You might also consider using your regular shampoo bottle and add a teaspoon of baking soda to it. Use this to wash hair 1 or 2 times each week. You can also combine equal parts of cornstarch and baking soda, sprinkling it to the roots of your hair. Tousle it around and then brush your hair with a high quality hairbrush.
10.Say Goodbye to Dandruff
Maintain a healthy pH level on your scalp so it’s not too oily and not too dry. To get rid of dandruff, apply one teaspoon of baking soda onto already wet hair, making sure you get it to the scalp. Let the baking soda work its magic for 1 minute and then thoroughly rinse it out. Do this once a week. Another option is to combine 1 teaspoon of baking soda with fresh lemon juice and applying it directly to the scalp. Let this sit on your scalp for 2-3 minutes before rinsing. This procedure can also be done once a week.
