One of the most harmful household chemicals, bleach, has been used commonly for cleaning purposes for many years now. Unfortunately, not many people know that the fumes from bleach can have negative impact on the nervous, immune, and respiratory systems, leading to cancer, asthma, autism, ADD, and allergies. Plus, traditional bleach is not even efficient since it has to dry on the surface you’re trying to disinfect in order to destroy all the bacteria.
Moreover, chlorine bleach is a strong corrosive material whose fumes irritate your eyes, skin and the respiratory tract by just inhaling. Then, a poisonous gas is released that can lead to heavy nose bleeds, neurological disorders, headaches and even death. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), dioxin – a toxic byproduct of chlorine is 300,000 times stronger carcinogen than DDT.
The mixture of bleach and ammonia produces toxic gases called chloramines. The following symptoms occur in case of exposure to chloramines:
- Watery eyes
- Chest pain
- Shortness of breath
- Irritation to the throat, nose, and eyes
There’s another argument that supports the fact about the health risks bleach can incur. Namely, during World War I chlorine was mixed with dish soap to produce mustard gas, which was used to kill many people.
